U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the law department of South Carolina College, was admitted to the bar in 1805 and commenced to practice law in Columbia, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1808-12), was a trustee of South Carolina College, in 1809 and served in the War of 1812, as a Colonel of the 3rd South Carolina Regiment. After the war, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses, serving (1813-17). After his ter, he resumed the practice of law and was director of the Columbia branch of the State Bank of South Carolina, (1830-58). He then moved to Lowndes County, Alabama and was a cotton farmer until his death at age 89.
