William L. "Bill" Chiswell, 76, of Gaithersburg, died May 22, at his home.

Born Aug 22, 1929, in Dickerson, he was the son of the late Maurice and Marjorie Chiswell and grew up in Olde Towne Gaithersburg.

He owned Thomas Hardware from 1955 to 1966 and Gaithersburg Rental from 1967 to 1994 with the late John S. Thomas.

Mr. Chiswell graduated with a business degree from the University of Maryland in 1951 and served in the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1954.

He was an avid sportsman with his hobbies of bowling, golf, hunting and fishing. His later years were spent in his gardens.

He was a charter member of the Montgomery Central-Derwood Lions Club and was also a Melvin Jones Fellow, a Lions Club honor.

He served on many committees at Grace United Methodist Church, Gaithersburg Sports Association and the Downtown Review Board for Olde Towne Gaithersburg.

Survivors in addition to his wife of 48 years, Emily Chiswell, include two sons, Robert Chiswell and wife Lynne of Gaithersburg, Steven Chiswell and wife Michele of Erie, Colo., and one daughter Carroll, and her husband Frank Sherman of Sandy Spring, and seven grandchildren.

A brother, Waters Chiswell, and a sister, Dot Walker, predeceased him.

Funeral services were at Grace United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg.

The Rev. Louis Piel officiated. Interment was in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.
