William Butler

U.S. Congressman. Moving to South Carolina as a young man, he served in the Snow Campaign under General Richardson in 1775 and in General Andrew Williamson’s expedition against the Cherokee Indians, in 1776. He also served as a Lieutenant under General Benjamin Lincoln, in 1779, served under General Andrew Pickens at the siege of Augusta, in 1780, as a Captain under General Henderson in 1781 and as Captain of Mounted Rangers under General Pickens in 1782. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1787-95), Sheriff of the Ninety-sixth District in 1791 and appointed Major General of the upper division of the South Carolina State Militia in 1796. In 1801, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventh Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1813. During the War of 1812, he was Major General commanding the troops raised for the defense of South Carolina. He then retired to his plantation until his death at age 61.
