U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1831, practiced as an assistant surgeon in the United States Army in 1832, studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, (1836-41). In 1841, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-seventh Congress, serving until 1843. After his term, he was superintendent of the United States Mint at Charlotte, in 1844 and served as a Captain of the 3rd Dragoons, U.S. Army during the war with Mexico, (1847-48). After the war, he was a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1849-50) and resumed the practice of medicine, until his death at age 58.
