U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to South Carolina, in 1900, he enlisted in the South Carolina National Guard, serving (1915-16). He then graduated from Furman University, in 1917 and served as a Second Lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps, U.S. Army, in 1918. Graduating from the law department of the University of South Carolina, in 1920, he was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Greenville, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1921-24) and served in the South Carolina State Senate, (1929-32). In 1939, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 60.
