U.S. Congressman. He attended the University of North Carolina, studied at the law department of the University of South Carolina, was admitted to the bar in 1908 and commenced to practice law in Greenville, South Carolina. Moving to Marshall, North Carolina, in 1910, he continued the practice of law and was a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, (1916-17). He was elected a trustee of the University of North Carolina in 1917, as a solicitor of the nineteenth judicial district (1919-22) and as chairman of the Buncombe County Republican committee in 1928. In 1929, he was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-first Congress, serving until 1931. An unsuccessful candidate for election, plus several other public offices, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 69.
