A farmer in civilian life, he served with Co. K, 27th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He was wounded at the battle of Antietam, slightly wounded at the battle of Chancellorsville, and severely wounded at the battle of Gettysburg, PA (shot through the right hip.) He was taken to XII Army Corps General Hospital at Gettysburg, then transferred to U.S. Army General Hospital at York, PA. Transferred again to U.S. Army Convalescent Hospital at Patterson Park, Baltimore, MD, he returned to his regiment in OCT 1863. Transferred to 70th Indiana Infantry and mustered out of volunteer service 21 JUL 1865.
