California Pioneer. Elihu Anthony arrived in Santa Cruz, California, in 1848 and built the first downtown business. It was a sawmill/blacksmith shop, but expanded to include a general store, post office, and the first California foundry outside of San Francisco. Here the state's first cast-iron plows were made. He was also the first postmaster of Santa Cruz and he built the first wharf. A Methodist minister, he founded the first Protestant church and was a member of the California State Assembly 6th District, 1880-81.
