The death year of 1908 comes from the book "Record of the Life of David Dudley Field, His Ancestors and Descendants" by Emilia R. Field, 1931 and also from the newspaper article about his funeral in the Oakland Tribune, issue of September 13, 1908, page 20. Why his grave marker has 1907 is not known.

The funeral article discloses that he was first buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, California on September 12, 1908 and that he committed suicide at Towle Station in the Sierras. He had been attending a private school, Agassiz Hall at Alta, Placer County, California and was supposed to be mentally unbalanced when he threw himself in front of a passing train.

He was not buried in Sunset View Cemetery until October 12, 1915.
