James E. Harwood, III lost a long and courageous battle with leukemia on November 16, 2011. He was 75 years old. He is survived by his wife, Dorotha (Dot) Bickerstaff Harwood and four children, Alicia Harwood Baker (Donald), Katharine Harwood Carruthers (Albert), Jean Harwood Sikes (Stuart) and James E. Harwood, IV (Grace); He also leaves his sister, Katharine Harwood Gooch (Robert) and eleven grandchildren who were the subjects of his enormous love and interest.

Jim was a graduate of Pentecost-Garrison and Christian Brothers High School and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Georgia Tech. He served in the business world for 55 years, holding positions as Vice President of Conwood Corporation, President of Dr. Scholl and DAP, Inc., both divisions of Schering-Plough, and President of Sterling Equities, Inc. He was a Board Member of Regions Bank, Morgan Keegan, Union Planters Bank, Leader Federal S&L and SCB Computer Technology Corporation.
Jim was also active in municipal and charitable matters. He was on the Board of the Church Health Center, Mid-South Coliseum, Christian Brothers University, Board of Visitors of the University of Memphis, and the Chickasaw Council of Boy Scouts of America. He was a director and member of the Memphis Country Club and a member of the Memphis Hunt & Polo Club.
He was widely known for his love of sports and his keen sense of competition. His participation ran from Sunday touch football games at Grahamwood School when he was younger, to tennis and golf in the later stages of his life.

Private internment will be followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., Saturday, November 19, 2011 at St. John's Episcopal Church. Visitation will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be sent to the Church Health Center, 1210 Peabody Ave, Memphis, TN 38104 or by going to www.churchhealthcenter.org.
