Mary Amanda first married James? Doolan in Lawrence County, Alabama about 1862. He died in the Civil War. Mary then married second in 1868 to James Harvey "Harve" Alexander, Jr., a widower himself, from Tennessee. Harve had at least three children by his first wife who likely died giving birth to her youngest child Phobe in 1866. He was much older than Mary, he being 35 and she 24 when they married. Mary raised Harv's children and never had any children of her own. In 1880 they were living in Boone County, AR and by 1900 in Ellis County, TX.

Mary first appears as a child of Calaway and Sarah Stephens, age 6, in the 1850 census for Tallapoosa County, AL and then as a 16 year old daughter in the 1860 census for Lawrence County, AL. The next record of Mary is as the wife of James H. Alexander in Boone County, AR in 1880 census. They are listed in household 26 in the Bear Creek Twp. James H. Alexander is listed as age 47, b TN and she is listed as his wife, Mary A., age 35, b. AL, with her father and mother born in GA. (Her mother was born in GA but her father in SC). Living with them are Harv's daughters Mary (age 16, b. TN) and Phobe (age 14, b. TN). Harv and Mary were living right in the middle of the Stephens Clan of Boone County. In household 19 was Mary's younger sister Arletha and her husband Richard C. OWEN. Mary's mother, Sarah A. Stephens is living with Arletha and Richard and is listed as his mother-in-law.

Other members of the Stephens clan are also listed. Next door to James H. and Mary Alexander, in household 27, is Mary's brother, Frank (Francis Calaway) Stephens and his family. Next to Frank in household 28 is John D. Alexander (age 18, b. TN, father in TN, mother in AL) with his new wife Nancy (age 18). (This would likely be Harv's oldest son, born about 1861 or 1862 in TN). In household 29 lived another of Mary's brothers, Joseph Richard Stephens and his family. And, in household 58 is Mary's oldest brother, John Wiley Stephens and his family.

Mary and Harv were enumerated in the 1900 US Census on 16th of June, 1900 in Ellis County, Texas, Pct 5, ED 29, Dwelling 172. They were living in Greathouse between Waxahachie and Maypearl. Harv was listed as proprietor of a grocery store. He was also a preacher at the Greathouse Baptist Church. In this census, Mary declares that she was the mother of no children and that they had been married for 32 years.

When Mary became ill with cancer, Harve was over 70 years of age and needed help taking care of her. Sometime about 1907 he sold his place at Greathouse and moved in with his son John D. Alexander in Kerens, Navarro County. Mary's 85 year old mother Sarah also moved to Kerens to be near her daughter. She found a place to board with a Davidson family and was still living in Kerens 6 months after Mary died which was in Oct 1909.
