John Granberry owned a grocery store in Breckenridge at 117 South Court Avenue. The store was home owned and featured home baked bread delivered three times a day from home bakeries in Breckenridge so the bread was always fresh.

Services for John Granberry were held in the First Baptist church officiated by the mayor of Breckenridge, A.J. Morgan, former pastor and Rev. Ross A. Smith, pastor. The funeral was standing room only in the church building as over 700 people came to pay their last respects.

Granberry came to Breckenridge in 1919. He had been a prominent grocery in town since 1922. During the oil boom, he was vice president of the Farmers and Merchants Bank. He headed the Retail Merchants Association as president in 1931.

His death occurred as the result of a thyroid gland operation in a Fort Worth hospital. He had been in ill health for several years and was confined to bed for the past five months.

His widow, a member of the Breckenridge public school faculty, and four children also survive - Miss Marjorie Granberry, Miss Marjorie Granberry, Walter Granberry, Herbert Granberry; one grandchild; one brother; three sisters.

Jonathan Elijah Granberry's father, Moses Hill Granberry, was the brother of my great great-grandfather, Simeon Travis Granberry. That is my relationship to "John" Elijah Granberry.

Day of birth in 26 May 1878 taken from his draft registration in Stephens County, Texas, 12 Sept. 1918. His name is listed as John Elijah Granberry. His occupation is Asst. Cashier at Guaranty State Bank. Katie Granberry, wife, Breckenridge, Stephens County, Tex. is listed as his nearest relative.

On the 1880 Census Dewitt County, Texas he is listed in the home of his parents as Jonathan Elijah Granberry. On the 1900 Census Record Lavaca County, Texas he is listed in the home of his parents as John Granberry.

His place of death is taken from Texas Deaths,1890-1976 certificate #36203 where on the transcribed record his date of birth is incorrectly listed as 20 May 1878.

Records I reference are available on FamilySearch.org, as well as the 1910 Census Stephens County, Texas where he resides with Katie and their children.

Every Census Record 1880-1930 where Jonathan Elijah, John, John E., or J.E. Granberry is listed shows he was born in Texas. On the 1870 and 1880 Census, his parents live in Dewitt County, Texas; therefore, DeWitt County would logically be the county where he was born given that he was born in 1878. His grandfather, Jonathan Granberry, was born in Georgia, and this may be the source of the confusion as to where Jonathan Elijah was born.

His draft registration shows his birth day as 26 May 1878. He signed the form. Cemetery records, obituaries, and any transcribed record has the potential to be incorrect, but an original record is more reliable.
