MARY SUE BALCH, 91, passed away on October 29, 2003 at Afton Oaks Nursing Center. She is predeceased by her husband Floyd R. Balch, and her sister Omie Brewster. She is survived by her son F. Raymond Balch and wife Adrian; grandson Christopher Bartlett and wife Amanda; her great granddaughter Elizabeth Nicole Balch Bartlett, and her niece Beverly May and husband Bill. Mary Sue was born September 13, 1912 in Tenaha, Texas, to George W. and Cora Alma Pettey Berry. After moving to Houston in the early 1930's, she and her sister performed as harmony singers with orchestras at churches, clubs and banquets, as well as on vaudeville stage and the radio. The sisters formed a group called the Melody Maids, at which time their mother learned to play drums so her daughters would not be on the road without a chaperone. Mary Sue also loved dancing, and she and Floyd won quite a few jitterbug contests in the 1940's. In fact, they met at a dance at the American Legion Post 52. Viewing will be at Miller Funeral Home, November 1, 2003, 2 to 4pm. Services will be November 3, 2003, 1:00pm at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, The Very Reverend James McGill presiding. Burial will be at Brookside Memorial Park immediately following the service. The family expresses deepest gratitude to the staff of Afton Oaks Nursing Center for the excellent care and friendship they gave Mary Sue.
