U.S. Congressman. He studied law at the University of North Carolina, was admitted to the bar in 1904 and commenced to practice law in Dallas, North Carolina. He was prosecuting attorney for the municipal court of Gastonia, (1913-16) and a Captain in Company B, 1st Infantry, North Carolina National Guard, (1909-17). During World War I, he served as a Major in command of the 2nd Battalion, 113th Field Artillery, 55th Brigade, 13th Division, American Expeditionary Forces. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-seventh Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving (1921-29). In 1931, he was again elected to the Seventy-second Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 67.
