Funeral services for Henry Abels of 1700 Park Drive will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Chapel with Dr. Adam Baum officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Mr. Abels, 95, honorary chairman of the board of directors of Franklin Life Insuarnce Co., died Saturday morning at his home. He joined the insurance firm in 1898 as auditor and completed 64 years service last week. He was elected secretary in 1901 and became vice president in 1918. Mr. Abel was named chairman of the board in 1944. He was also active in community affairs, serving on the board of directors of Child and Family Service. He belonged to the Central Baptist Church, the Sangamo Club, the YMCA and the Illini Country Club. Mr. Abel served seven terms as president of the country club and was still an active club member at the time of his death. He was an active golfer up to the age of 90. Mr. Abels was born Feb. 19, 1867 in Jasper County. He is survived by his widow, Jeannette R.; two daughters, Mrs. Ward Montgomery and Mrs. William Kimber, both of Springfield; two brothers, James Abels of Pleasant Plains and Fred of Long Beach, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Walter E. Jadwin of Cabool, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
