Radio comedian. Recalled for portraying the character of Beulah on the Fibber McGee and Molly show (before a spinoff of Hurt's own broadcast was produced), ironic in that Beulah was the McGee's black maid and Hurt was a white man. Beulah was a character in the "Aunt Jemima" vein, described as "a simple-minded but well-meaning meddler." Beulah's most famous entrance catch-phrase was "Sombody bawl fo' Beulah?" when the name was yelled for, guaranteed to get the audience howling. Hurt died unexpectedly before completion of the first season of "Beulah."
