Robert Thornton (Robbie) Reid
age 93, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010. He was born on September 20, 1916 in Salem, Indiana to Mabel and Howard Thornton Reid. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Burrell Reid, and his sister, Martha Shanks. He was much loved and will be greatly missed by his children, Lucinda Jean (Roger), Terry Reid, Robert Gifford Reid (Vickie), Monica Zontanos (Charles) and Sally Dinwiddie (Mark), ten loving grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Robbie was a 1938 graduate of Purdue University where he was president of his fraternity, Delta Tau Delta. At the young age of 27, he served as a U.S. Navy commanding officer, overseeing 25 officers and 200 enlisted men on the U.S.S.S. C505 (Duty on Solomon Island) and the U.S.S.C. . He loved his country and forever remained a patriot.
He later founded Fleck, Quebe and Reid, an architectural-engineering firm still operating as R.Q.A.W. in Indianapolis. He had a tremendous influence on the development of Indianapolis growing into the city it is today. He and his company were responsible for two of the biggest projects in the state of Indiana - Indianapolis AWT and the Indiana Toll Road.
Robbie was active in many clubs and organizations. He was a 25 year member of Meridian Hills Country Club. Additionally, he served as president of the Columbia Club, the Country Club of Indianapolis and the 100 Club (Indianapolis Police Charity). Active in the local Republican Party, he founded the "Circle Club," a financial support group for Richard D. Lugar for U.S. Senate. He was a proud recipient of the distinguished "Sagamore of the Wabash" honorary award from the State of Indiana, the highest honor which the Governor of Indiana bestows.
In 1981, he and Peggy retired to Naples, Florida where they were original owners in the Wilderness Country Club. He loved golf and Republican politics and will be especially remembered for his leadership, generosity and sense of humor.
Robbie's family extends special thanks to St. Vincent Hospital and the staff of the Forum at the Crossing for their loving care in his last years.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 11th at Leppert Mortuary, 740 E. 86th Street from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. A private family service will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society (5635 W. 96th Street, Zionsville, IN, 46077) or Riley Hospital (702 Barnhill Drive, Indpls, IN 46202).
