U.S. Congressman. He attended the Rutherfordton Military Institute, also the Law School of the University of North Carolina and engaged in the mercantile business. He was admitted to the bar, practiced of law in Thomasville, North Carolina and was Mayor of Thomasville, (1906-10). Moving to Lexington, North Carolina, he was president and attorney for the Industrial Bank of Lexington, served in the North Carolina State House of Representatives, in 1931 and the North Carolina State Senate, in 1933. In 1939, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 68.
