U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1906 and commenced to practice law in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. He was president of the Bank of Elizabethtown, (1910-22), served in the North Carolina State House of Representatives in 1915 and was a member of the North Carolina State Judicial Conference, (1924-28). In 1929, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-first Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving until 1949. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 77.
