Arnold was the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. K. Johnston. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and Texas A.&M. College. He enlisted in the A.&M. school of navigation in January 1942. Afer preliminary training at Kelly Field, San Antonio, he was graduated from the Hondo School of Navigation in February 1943 and commissioned a second lieutenant.

2nd Lt. Johnston was stationed at Blythe Field about five months. He had just returned from a weekend visit with his parents in Dallas when he took off on the flight that carried him to his death. He was navigator aboard an Army plane that took off from Blythe Field on August 12. When the plane was reported overdue, a search was started, and the wreckage was found two days later ten miles north of Indio, California.
