Robert E. (Doc) Duncan, 73, a resident of Del Norte for 35 years, died Tuesday morning at the hospital after several years of failing health. Funeral services will be held today at the Sharp and Doney Chapel with burial in the Del Norte cemetery.
Mr. Duncan farmed a few years after coming to the area, but his trade was mainly that of a stone cutter and mason, carpenter and mechanic. He was foreman on the WPA project when the Underwood school and courthouse were constructed of native limestone, the material quarried and used.
He was born May 24, 1891 at Kenton, Oklahoma, one of seven sons of Thomas Jefferson and Adeline Duncan. He spent his early days in Oklahoma and Clayton, New Mexico.
He and Miss Myrtle Ethel Johnson, who survives him, were married at Clayton May 20, 1917. Several years later they moved to Pagosa Springs where he worked in the sawmill industry. Four children were born to the Duncans—Roberta of Salida; Albert of Glenwood Springs; David of Colorado Springs; and Robert Lee of Del Norte. Also surviving are two stepdaughters; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Ray of Palisade and Herman of McCall, Idaho.
