CALVIN C. COLTON DEAD AT GREAT AGE

EXPIRES OF HEART FAILURE AFTER SHORT ILLNESS

He Was a Pioneer of Onondaga, and a Well Known Citizen.

Calvin C. Colton, one of the pioneers of Onondaga County, died at 6 o'clock last evening at the home of his son, Charles E. Colton, No. 115 Merriman avenue. Mr. Colton had been troubled with heart failure for some time. He was taken with a chill Sunday evening and all efforts to relieve him proved futile. He revived somewhat Monday, but his heart was inactive. He gradually became weaker and death occurred last evening.
Mr. Colton was born in Pompey August 21, 1813, and was the youngest of several sons. He graduated from Manlus Academy at an early age, and for several years taught school in different towns of the county.
In 1840 he came to this city, then a village, and entred the employ of Henry Gifford, lumber merchant. He married Susan Eleanor Nottingham of De Witt, who survives him.

Became Member of Firm.

After a few years in the employ of Mr. Gifford he became a member of the firm, which was known as Gifford & Colton and which afterward became Colton & Baker. He retired from active life in 1863 and has since with his wife resided with his son, Charles E. Colton.
Mr. Colton was one of the founders of the First Presbyterian Church and was well known as one of the early pioneers of Syracuse. He was a man of unquestioned integrity, and was respected by all with whom he came in contact.
In politics he was a Whig until the formation of the Republican party in 1856. Since that time he has been an ardent supporter of the principles of Republicanism. Although nearly 87 years of age his mind was clear, and he had taken much interest in local and national affairs.

Funeral Thursday.

The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house, Dr. George B. Spaulding assisted by Rev. Allen D. Draper and Rev. J. V. Benham of Baldwinsville will conduct the services. Burial will be at Oakwood.
He was a son of Erastus and Cyretia Colton.
