US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in the US House of Representatives for Indiana's 8th congressional district, from January 1983 until January 1995. In 1957 he joined the US Air Force and was discharged in 1961 at the rank of sergeant. He then moved to Bloomington, Indiana, and worked as a reporter for several newspapers while attending Indiana University, and received a bachelor's degree in political science and a law degree in 1971. He then was elected as mayor of Bloomington, serving from 1972 until 1983. In 1982 he ran for Congress and won with a surprising upset of the Republican incumbent Joel Deckard. the first of what would be six consecutive terms. During his tenure, he was a member of the House Armed Services Committee (1983 to 1995), as well as the Small business Committer (1983 to 1995), the Post office and Civil Service Committee (1985 to 1995), and the Foreign Affairs Committee (1989 to 1995). In 1994 he was defeated for a 7th term by Republican John Hostettler and after vacating his seat, he focused his efforts on bringing peace and stability to Bosnia and the Balkans region. He died from bladder cancer at the age of 64.
