Del Norte Prospector dated May 19, 1944
On Thursday, May 11, a kindly life-long resident of Del Norte passed away. Lillie Willis Biles, daughter of George and Matilda Newton Willis, early pioneers in this section, was born Feb. 16, 1884, and died at St. Joseph’s Hospital May 11. The end came rather unexpectedly, though she had suffered constantly since breaking her hip early in February.
Mrs. Biles grew to girlhood in this community, attended the local schools and took part in all school and church activities. At 19 years of age, she was married to William Bingel and they made their home on a San Francisco Creek ranch. Of this union, two children survive—Mrs. Mary Journay, of Houston, Texas, and Harry Bingel, of Detroit, Michigan. William Bingel, the father, was killed in an accident in 1915.
On November 5, 1920, she was married to Dr. John A. Biles, and to this marriage were born a daughter and a son. Betty, the daughter, was born May 14, 1922. In January of 1923, Dr. Biles passed away, and John Alexander Biles, Jr., was born May 4 of that year.
Thus, twice in her lifetime, which has not been an easy one, Mrs. Biles has had to assume the work and responsibility of being bread-winner and both father and mother to her little brood.
She was patient, generous and kindly; ever busy about her home and its guests, and her duties at the telephone exchange. She saw her children through Del Norte High School, and it is a great sorrow to them that she cannot attend John’s graduation from the University of Colorado this year, and, see her daughter, Betty, independent and established in her place in the bank at Boulder.
Mrs. Biles’ outstanding characteristic was faithfulness—faithfulness to her family, her friends, her work. Of her it can be truly said, ‘She was faithful unto death.’
Besides her children she leaves to mourn her absence, her sister, Mrs. Elmer Underwood; a brother, Harry Willis, of Florida, and many loyal friends whose admiration for her courage under physical handicap and frail health, was very genuine.
