Roman Catholic Archbishop. With the death of Archbishop Ryan in 1911, Edmond Francis Prendergast, who had been Ryan's auxiliary bishop, was appointed the third Archbishop of Philadelphia. Prendergast directed the building of many new charitable institutions including Misericordia Hospital, Archbishop Ryan Memorial Institute for the Deaf, Saint Edmond's Home for Crippled Children and West Philadelphia Catholic High School for Boys and the Archbishop Ryan Memorial Library at the seminary. He died in Philadelphia in 1918.
