Thomas Mather, sr., died at his home at Mather's Corners, Otonabee, on Friday last, at the age of 71 years, and was buried on Monday at Keene cemetery. Deceased was born in the county of Northumberland, England, in the year 1816, and came to Canada in '32, settling in this county. In 1837 he took part in the rebellion, afterwards locating in Otonabee on the spot where he afterwards lived until his death, and which was named in his honor "Mather's Corners." Here he carried on the wagonmaking business until the year 1874, when he retired in favor of his sons.
In early life he married a Miss Morgan, and seven children blessed their union, five of whom are still living. The two sons, W. T. and Samuel, conduct the business at the Corners; all the daughters are married, viz, Mrs. Comrie and Mrs. Cruickshank, who reside near the homestead, and Mrs. Diston, of Bowmanville. He was married a second time, to Mrs. Cruickshank.
Deceased was one of the most thoroughly known and highly respected residents of the township. He was esteemed for his honest and upright life, his consistent character and his kind charity always ready to practically exemplify itself. He was a devout member of the Presbyterian church, and took a prominent part in church work.

Thomas took part in The Rebellions of 1837 which were two armed uprisings that took place in Lower and Upper Canada in 1837 and 1838. Both rebellions were motivated by frustrations with political reform. A key shared goal was responsible government, which was eventually achieved in the incidents' aftermath. The rebellions led directly to Lord Durham's Report on the Affairs of British North America and to The British North America Act, 1840 which partially reformed the British provinces into a unitary system and eventually led to the British North America Act 1867 which created Canada and its government.
