Son of William DeSpain and Rachel Cox DeSpain (Note: the family surnames can be found in sources as being either DeSpain or Despain; some family members used one version or the other, and some census and other sources can be found with conflicting versions.)

The given name order is questionable: some sources have Isaac Newton DeSpain, other sources have Newton Isaac ("I") DeSpain. Will use the first version as that is used in his obituary, pending any clarification with a headstone photo (see update below). Will use the "Despain" surname per the obituary as well. The obituary uses Abingdon and Galesburg, Illinois as his death location. Will use Galesburg for this memorial, with some reservation and caution.

A tentative FGS for the William DeSpain Sr. family on file in the Fairfield Public Library, Fairfield, Iowa gives the DOB for "Isaac Newton DeSpain" as March 26, 1867. The 1930 obituary evidently uses March 28, 1867. Will use the obituary provided DOB pending clarification since the FGS was self-described as tentative as of 1992 when it was initially prepared.

Married to Emma C Peterson on August 16, 1886 in Jefferson county, Iowa. They had four children. When she died and where buried has not yet been determined by this contributor (rkt); any clarification would be appreciated. Could she be in this Abingdon cemetery???

Married to Alice Richardson on Nov. 21, 1906. Three children from that marriage.

Note: There are obituary transcriptions posted on Ancestry website for Isaac Newton DeSpain from the Fairfield Daily Ledger, published on Friday, July 25, 1930. Pg. 2 Col. 1. It should be noted that those transcriptions do not necessarily have the entire text transcribed. On this memorial is a microfilm copy of the full text obituary that may be of interest to those interested in or related to this Despain family.

Note: thanks to Marsha for the transfer of this memorial, that was originally entered by her mother. rkt/ July 8, 2011.

Update: Thanks to Sean for the headstone photos - which show the name as "Newton I". Sigh. At this point, I'm leaving the full name as "Isaac Newton DeSpain" with the caution that the headstone engraved order of names is reversed. I don't know how to reconcile the differences so will let others who may or may not be related to this family at least be able to see that the obituary and headstone engravings conflict, and make choices as to what name order is preferred. //rkt July 28, 2011.
