Barzillai was the son of Moses (1729-1819) and Abigail Hale Stickney (1731-1791). He married Olive Lawerence (1760-1849) in 1790 (some records say Jan. 12, 1790, the same day his first wife, Hannah Blackman, died) and had the following children:

Paul (1798-1834)
Abiram (1799-1802)
Saphronia (1801-1846)
