First Commissioner of the NYPD 1845-1857. He served in 6th Infantry {New York}. Author of 1859 "Vocabulum, or, The rogue's lexicon: compiled from the most authentic sources". President of the Board of Police Commissioners 1873-1874.

According to NY Times, he was baptized at St. Mary's Church in Brandon, Norfolk, England. Immigration records indicate he was naturalized by his father at age 15.

George W. and his wife Elizabeth Barrett Matsell had no grandchildren.

His large country estate in Linn Co., IA is now Matsell Bridge Natural Area.
