U.S. Congressman. He studied law in Pearson's Law School, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Marshall, North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina State Senate, in 1900 and North Carolina State solicitor of the sixteenth district, (1901-02). In 1903, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-eighth and Fifty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1907. He was again elected to the Sixty-second and Sixty-third Congresses, serving (1911-15). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 64.
