Philippine Insurrection Congressional Medal of Honor recipient. Entered the service at Grafton, North Dakota, and served as a Private, United States Army in Company C, 1st North Dakota Infantry. Near Paete, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on April 12, 1899, he single-handedly and alone defended his dead and wounded comrades against a greatly superior force of the enemy. His Medal was awarded on March 12, 1902.
