U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Cumberland University, and from Lebanon Law School Tennessee, in 1859. During the Civil War, he served as a Colonel in command of the 14th North Carolina Troops, Confederate Army and was wounded in battle on three occasions. After the war, he practiced law, was solicitor of Anson County, (1866-67), a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, (1872-74) and judge of the superior court, (1880-82). In 1883, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth Congresses, serving until 1887. After leaving Congress, he practiced law until his death at age 73.
