Auto Driven by Danville Restaurant Owner Struck by Southbound New Orleans Limited; Bodies Are Mutilated

Robert Shuttles Richard Toadvine Victims Girl's Identification Tentative

DANVILLE, Ky, Dec. 20-Two Danville men and a woman, tentatively identified as Miss Marie Turner of Somerset were killed at Junction City five miles south of here tonight at 9:18 o'clock when their automobile was struck by a fast south-bound Southern Railway train.
The two victims were positively Identified as being Robert Shuttle 45 and Richard Toadvine, both of Danville. Identification of the woman however was only tentative because her body was badly mutilated — almost beyond recognition
Officers who Investigated the fatal accident said that it appeared that Shuttles owner of a Walnut street restaurant In Danville was driving the car at the time of the crash
Shuttles apparently noticed the approaching train just as his automobile neared the crossing for tracks left on the lce-coated highway revealed he had applied his brakes hurriedly the automobile sliding — out of control— directly in front of the oncoming locomotive.
The time of the wreck was set at 9:18 o'clock for that is the regular time the New Orleans Limited roaring along with its throttle open darts through Junction City every night— and the New Orleans Limited was on time tonight.
Bodies of the victims end wreckage of their coupe were strewn along tho railroad right of way for one-half a mile
The train pulled to a stop more than a mile away from the crossing after striking the automobile. It was backed up to the crossing while its crew made an investigation to see if any assistance could be offered and then the fast Southern express resumed its trip southward again.
Miss Daisy Shuttles a sister of one of the victims said that she last saw her brother alive when he, Toadvine and a "girl I think was "Billie" Turner told me they were going for a ride".
The bodies of the victims were brought to the Thurmond Undertaking parlors here tonight. Magistrate J S Bonta in the absence of the Boyle county coroner called an Inquest in an effort to complete Identification of the trio.
Marie "Billie" Turner formerly lived on Oak street in Danville but about a month ago she moved to Somerset with her parents. Her age was said to be 21 years old
Shuttles was known to be deaf and this Infirmity might have partly contributed to tonight's tragedy some of his friends declared. Shuttles was unmarried. Besides his sister he is survived by one brother Clyde Shuttles.
Toadvine is survived by his parents who operate a grocery in West Danville. He had three brothers. Toadvine also was unmarried.
