Mr. Begaye was born Jan. 3, 1918, in Bodaway. His maternal clan was Kii Yaa Anii (Towering House) and his paternal clan was Ta Baa Ha (Edgewater).
Mr. Begaye served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Arena during World War II. He was a former Navajo Tribal Council member and served on various commissions and advisory boards.
Mr. Begaye is survived by his daughter, Lolita Rosanda Humetewa; sons Lee E. Begaye Jr., Johnathan Ray Begaye and Nathan Scott Begaye; stepson Darryl James Humetewa; brother George Begay; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lolita H. Begaye; parents Arthur and Leona Begay; sisters Elsie Begay, Violet Begay, Mary Sloan, Myrtle Nez and Alice Chee; brother Ray Begay; and son Anthony James.
A funeral service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. (DST) at Navajo Baptist Church in Tuba City. Memorial donations can be made to the mortuary or to the Wells Fargo account of Lolita Humetewa.
