James U. "Bud" Bowen, 52, Rockford, died Fri., March 13, 1992, in his home after a three-year battle with cancer. Born May 1, 1939 in Rockford, the son of James G. and Marvel Urban Bowen. Married Joycie M. Shelton in Beeville, TX, Nov. 27, 1963. Employed as quality control test inspector by Sundstrand Corporation for 25 years. Graduated from West High School; entered U.S. Navy in 1956 and served until 1966. Member Cathedral Baptist Church and U.A.W. Local 592. Coached and managed intermediate and junior girls softball at Ken-Rock Center for 10 years; managed Rockford Merchants in Northern Illinois Women's Fast-Pitch Softball League for five years; later managed Sundstrand Women's R.I.A.A. League and was athletic director of Sundstrand Association.

Survivors include wife, Joycie Bowen; two sons, James L. and John S.; one daughter, Jill M. Bowen; one grandson; three brothers, William L., Rodney E. and Randall E. Bowen; three sisters, Verna L. (Richard) Glover, Bonnie L (Les) Clapper and Kathleen A. (Tom) Graydon. Predeceased by his parents and one niece.
