Civil War Union Major General. Born in Schenectady, New York, he was working as an attorney in New York City, New York when he joined the New York Rifles militia as a Private at the start of the Civil War. Promoted Major in the 51st New York Volunteer Infantry, he participated in March 1862 expedition to North Carolina, the August 1862 Battle of Cedar Mountain and at the September 1862 Battle of Antietam. Promoted to Brigadier General, US Volunteers in March 1863, he led his troops at Petersburg and he was the only division commander present at the disastrous July 1864 Federal attack at the Battle of the Crater. During the final attack on the Petersburg, April 2, 1865, he was severely wounded and was removed from the field. He was promoted Major General, US Volunteers on September 29, 1865 and mustered out of the service in January 1866. After the war, he worked as receiver of the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad.
