Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War as Captain and commander of Company A, 1st Delaware Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the Second Day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 2, 1863). His citation reads "Voluntarily delivered an order in the face of heavy fire of the enemy" His Medal was awarded to him on July 22, 1892.
