World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment. At St. Julien, Belgium, on July 31, 1917, when his first objective had been captured by the Germans, he reorganized the company. While waiting for the barrage to lift, he was hit by a shell, which exploded the signal lights in his haversack and set fire to his equipment and clothes. Having extinguished the flames, in spite of his wound and the severe pain, he led forward the remains of the company under heavy machine gun fire and captured his objective. He was subsequently killed by a sniper while inspecting the consolidation and encouraging his men. For most conspicuous bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in September 1917.
