(The following is from Bachus's military service and pension records.)
He was born in Watertown, Jefferson County, NY; he gave his date of birth as May 16, 1837. His occupation was stonemason.
During the Civil War, he was first enrolled in Co. "K" of the 94th New York Infantry, from January 5, 1862 until October 1864, and saw action at 2nd Bull Run (Manassas), and Antietam. (He was listed on the rolls as "Backus.")
On October 6, 1864, he enlisted in Co. "B" of the Independent Loudoun Virginia Rangers (USA), and was mustered in on October 22. In March 1865, he was detached from his unit to serve as an orderly at Brig.Gen. Stevenson's HQ at Harpers Ferry. He was mustered out with the rest of his unit on May 31, 1865, at Bolivar, WV.
From 1865 to 1867 he lived at Addison, Gallia County, OH, and after that, at Cottageville, Jackson County, WV, where he married Mary Matilda McKown in 1870.

George's West Virginia Death Record stated that he died from a cerebral hemorrhage at Cottageville, Jackson County on July 11, 1917, aged 78 years, 1 month and 15 days.
