He is the son of William Norvell (1779-1848) and Sally Austin Guerrant Norvell (1784-1840). He moved with his family to Kentucky in 1836, and on to Missouri in 1838. After his first wife died in 1852, he married Nancy C. Lucas July 20, 1854 in Saline County, Missouri.
One of James Anderson Norvell and Martha Belle (Guerrant) Norvell's sons was Robert Henderson Norvell (1834-1881).
