Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served during the Civil War in Company E, 2nd Maryland Volunteer Infantry, rising from Private to Captain and commander of the unit. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery while a 1st Sergeant on July 30, 1864 during the siege of Petersburg, Virgina. His citation reads "Finding himself among a squad of Confederates, he fired into them, killing 1, and was himself wounded, but succeeded in bringing in a sergeant and 2 men of the 17th South Carolina Regiment (C.S.A.) as prisoners". He himself was later captured. During the War he had served under the alias of Henry Sivel. When he was awarded the CMOH on July 10, 1892, it was issued under his wartime pseudonym. He applied for and received the Medal under his real name in 1900.
