(from Kathy Goins)
According to my mother-in-law, Martha PUCKETT GOINS, her grandmother, "Granny Mink", Emillie MONTGOMERY PUCKETT, said that her husband Ephraim PUCKETT was married to Jenette McBRIDE first. Jenette died in childbirth within a year of their marriage. Ephraim was so afraid it would happen again, he told Emillie that he would not marry her if she wanted children. So she told him she could live without children and they were married. But God or fate stepped in and they eventually had a son, Paola PUCKETT. And Paola is responsible for fathering 13 children.
Martha says her mother told her that she was born just two days before her grandfather Ephraim died. Her mother, Mary Belle SHELTON PUCKETT, said that it snowed that week. When the family went to carry Ephraim to his final resting place in the family cemetery on top of a hill behind the family farm in Willis Gap, Patrick County, VA, they had to tie the coffin to a pulley and have a team of mules pull it up to the top of the steep hill. It was a dangerous, difficult business. The gravediggers had to use pickaxes to open the ground enough to bury him properly.
Children of EPHRAIM PUCKETT and JENETTE MCBRIDE are:
i. INFANT7 PUCKETT, b. 30 Apr 1866, Patrick County, VA; d. 30 Apr 1866, Patrick County, VA.
