His early years were on a farm in the Lubbock, Texas area. In the mid-thirties the family moved to the area north of Las Cruces, NM, a little town Arrey where they raised cotton.

One summer during his high school years, he worked in the local drugstore as a soda jerk -- making sundaes, root beer floats, serving ice cream cones. Near the end of WWII, Al joined the Air Force and for a while was stationed in the Philippines - at the USAF base near Manila.

After leaving the Air Force, he went back to live in the Las Cruces area, went to New Mexico State University and received his degree. In the mid-fifties he left Las Cruces and moved out to Los Angeles. There he worked in the downtown Stock Exchange.
