Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War as Colonel and commander of the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He led the regiment at the Battle of Antietam, where it was heavily engaged in the brutal fighting in the West Woods. He was brevetted Brigadier General, USV on March 13, 1865.
