George White Baxter

Wyoming Governor. Graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, in 1877, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd U.S. Cavalry. After leaving the U.S. Army, he settled in Wyoming in 1881. On November 11, 1886, President Grover Cleveland appointed him U.S. Territory Governor of Wyoming, serving until December 20, 1886, when he resigned from the office. Baxter returned to politics in 1889, serving as a delegate to the Wyoming Constitutional Convention. He went to Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1892 and engaged private business in various states until his death at age 74.
