Not long after their marriage Samuel and Frances traveled from Anthon in Woodbury County, Iowa by covered wagon to Dawes County in Nebraska and settled near Wayside on 160 acres. They lived in a dugout on the land for one year and gained title under the Homestead Act. They then returned to Anthon, Iowa and a few years later moved to Wyoming and attempted to secure title to property on a tree claim, but failed to stay the required time. They moved then to Charles City in Floyd County, Iowa, and eventually settled in Des Moines where Samuel was a real estate salesman. Then, the family returned to Iowa and resided in Cherokee, Cherokee County by 1900. In 1910 they were in Spencer, Clay County, Iowa where Samuel worked as a real estate salesman, an occupation he continued to pursue in 1920 in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa.
