Darius was a fifer with the Adams and Crosby Regiment of the New York Volunteers during the War of 1812. A secondary source (probably based on family legend) says that Darius was "scalped by Indians" during the Battle of Fort Erie in September 1814, and that his brother Amos brought him home for burial pickled in brine.
