Washington, D.C. Mayor. Walter Washington served as the first Mayor of Washington, D.C. from 1975 to 1979. He was defeated in the primary election in 1978 by Marion Barry. In 1967, he was appointed to the post of Mayor-Commissioner of Washington, D.C. by President Lyndon B. Johnson.
