Leo Herbert, 84, formerly of Blacksburg, Virginia, passed from this life at his home in Springville on Saturday, August 10, after a valiant struggle with cancer.
He was born in Douglas, Arizona, on March 7, 1912, to Kumen Onhi and Urilla Whipple Herbert. He married Ruth Parker on June 30, 1937, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died on April 20, 1981.
Leo received his bachelors degree in 1939 from Brigham Young University. He earned an MBA degree in 1941 and a Ph.D. in 1944 from Louisiana State University.
He was a Certified Public Accountant in Utah and Louisiana. Dr. Herbert held teaching positions at LSU and BYU before becoming department head in business administration at Louisiana Tech in 1948. He was appointed Assistant State Auditor of Louisiana in 1952.
In 1956 he moved to Arlington, VA, and was appointed Director, Office of Staff Management at the General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C., where he was responsible for recruiting and training professional accountants. Upon his retirement in 1974, Dr. Herbert became a professor at Virginia Tech and a consultant to the Comptroller General of the U.S., and the United Nations in Gambia and the Phillipines.
He has published numerous books and articles on auditing. At the time of his death, he was Professor Emeritus of Accounting at Virginia Tech and was writing a personal favorite book on setting and achieving goals.
He was an active member of the LDS Church serving a mission in Arkansas as part of the Central States Mission in the early 1930's. He held numerous positions throughout his life and was called as Patriarch in 1978 in Virginia. He was a man who believed in the importance of education and provided financial support so his children and grandchildren would have the opportunity to attend college. In 1981, the Leo Herbert Accounting Scholarship at Virginia Tech was established.
Dr. Herbert is survived by a son and two daughters and their spouses, Frank and Ina Lee Herbert (Draper, UT), Dahnelle and Roger Overly (Springville, UT), and Judy Spencer and William Harris (Hyattsville, MD), 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, August 14, at 11 a.m. in the Kolob Stake Center, 1230 South 500 East. Friends may call at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South, Springville, Tuesday from 6 until 8 p.m., or Wednesday at the church from 10 to 10:45 am. Burial will be in the Springville Evergreen Cemetery.
