Gene Edward Stukey

Gene Edward Stukey, 72, of Parkersburg, died Thursday, November 10, 2011, at his home with his family beside him.

He was born on January 16, 1939 in Parkersburg to the late Charles and Johnny Mae Vance Stukey.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers-in-law, David Knopp and James Bird.

He is survived by his wife, Fran Johnson Stukey of Parkersburg; sister, Darlene Knopp of Toano, Va.; nephew and niece, David and Renee Knopp both of Toano, Va.; sister-in-law, Carolyn Bird of New Haven; brother-in-law, Howard Johnson of Owensboro, Ky.; and several nephews and nieces.

Master Chief Hospital Corpsman Gene E. Stukey retired from the Navy after 31 years of service. He entered the US Navy at Ashland, Ky. in 1956. He attended basic training and Hospital Corps School in Great Lakes, Ill. before reporting to his first duty station at Naval Hospital, Beaufort, SC. He next received field medical training with the 2nd Marine Division and reported to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines for duty in May 1958.

Sea duty followed aboard USS Nitro (AE-23) in September 1959. In June 1961, then HM2 Stukey reported for duty to fighter Squadron 101 in Naval Air Station, Oceana, Va. He was promoted to HM1 while serving there. He served on the staff of CIN-CLANFLT, 3rd MARDIV (reinforced) in the Republic of Vietnam; sea duty in the Atlantic Fleet on board USS Limpkin (MSC-195); with the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington, DC; on board USS Mount Whitney (LCC-20); USS Shenandoah (AD-26); COMDRUDESLANT Staff; CINCLANTLFT Headquarters, Naval Hospital, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Naval Hospital Portsmouth, Va.; and as Command Master Chief of Naval Medical Command, Mid-Atlantic Region, Norfolk, Va.

Master Chief Stukey's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Awards, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (two awards) Combat Active Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Citation (Gallant Cross), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #140, VFW Post #9920, Masonic Lodge #23 and the Fleet Reserve.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, November 13, 2011, at Foglesong-Roush Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Kirkland Memorial Gardens, with Rev. Jeff Williamson officiating.

Friends may call on the family from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2011, at the funeral home.
